The «tenora» is one of the traditionals instruments of Catalonia, maybe the most known and certainly the one that better combines interpretatives and musicals possibilities. The tenora is a tenor shawm, or high-pitched tenor oboe, and consists of two «azufaifo» bodies, a bell, and alpaca keys. It is tuned in B flat. It's tessitura stretches from E2 (concert pitch) up to approximately C5, although on a few occasions virtuous players can reach C6.
The artisan designer Perpinyà Andreu Toron presented the model that is currently in use in 1849.

Soloist par excellence of the cobla and blessed with incredible melodic capacity in all of its registers, the tenora has been played fantastically by big stars like Albert Martí, Josep Coll, and Ricard Viladesau. One of its current exponents is Jordi Molina. These stars have catalysed popular enthusiasm and made this the most emblematic instrument rooted in traditional Catalan music.
The tenora was described by Heitor Villa-Lobos as, «an oboe with masculine qualities».
