Is very seldom to found the tenora –a catalan shawn- as an instrument of the symphonic orchestra. It has only been used in such a way by few catalan composers, mainly Juli Garreta and Josep Maria Ruera. Its presence as a solo instrument is a relatively recent phenomenon.
My first experience as a tenora soloist with an orchestra was in the spring of 2003, when the première of “Centenari”, by Francesc Cassú, took place. It was performed at Barcelona’s Auditori by the “Orquesta Sinfónica del Vallés”, under the direction of Salvador Brotons. Later, in July of 2006, I also participated in the first performance of “Concert catalanesc per a tenora i orquestra”, by Salvador Brotons, with the “Orquesta Sinfónica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya”, directed by the composer himself.
Since then, I have always been convinced that these compositions above should be recorded so as to help make them better known, but I also wanted to expand the specific repertoire to fill the entire content of a CD.
I then asked Joan Lluís Moraleda to transcribe for tenora and orchestra his work “Romança”, originally written for tenora and wind band (and dedicated to Jaume Vilà, the renowned tenora player). Finally, I also encouraged Jesús Ventura to rearrange the “Cant dels ocells”, a composition that he originally wrote for cello and cobla.
Once the music had been gathered, we still needed to put together a team to complete this ambitious project.
It seemed obvious that Salvador Brotons should be the musical director of the project. He is not only composer of the most extensive work included in yhe CD, but also an enthusiast of the cobla ensemble and one of the most important directors in the country.
The final result of all above is the present compact disc with works for tenora and orchestra, a new born repertoire in the history of the music… and one of the most thrilling experiences I have ever lived as a player.
